Darood Shareef

Send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — a divine command in the Holy Quran (Al-Ahzab 33:56)

درود ابراہیم

Darood-e-Ibrahim

Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 3370 & Sahih Muslim 406 | Recited in every Salah

📖 Introduction

Darood Ibrahim is the most fundamental and universally recited form of Salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the entire Islamic tradition. It is not merely a supplication but a pillar of worship — recited in the Qa'dah (sitting position) of every single Salah by hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide, multiple times every day. Ka'b ibn Ujrah ؓ narrated that when the verse of Salawat (Al-Ahzab 33:56) was revealed, the Companions asked the Prophet ﷺ how they should send blessings upon him. The Prophet ﷺ himself taught them this very Darood, which has been transmitted through an unbroken chain of narration for over 1,400 years. Its spiritual power lies in comparing our invocation of blessings to those that Allah sent upon Ibrahim ﷺ — the Khalilullah (Friend of Allah) — reflecting the supreme station of our beloved Prophet ﷺ.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is Darood Ibrahim the same as Durood Ibrahim?
+
Yes — "Darood" (Urdu/Persian) and "Durood" are the same word, simply transliterated differently. "Durood Ibrahim" is the most widely used term in South Asian communities, while "Darood" is common in Pakistani and Indian usage. Both refer to the exact same supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ himself.
Is it compulsory to recite Darood Ibrahim in every Salah?
+
According to the Hanafi school, Darood Ibrahim in the final Qa'dah (sitting) is Wajib (obligatory). In the Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools, it is considered Fardh (a pillar) of the prayer. Neglecting it intentionally can invalidate the Salah according to several scholars.
What is the reward for reciting Darood Ibrahim once?
+
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah sends ten blessings upon him, erases ten sins, and raises him ten degrees." (Sahih Muslim 408). Each recitation earns at minimum 10-fold divine mercy.
What are the best times to recite Darood Ibrahim?
+
After every obligatory Salah, abundantly on Fridays (Jumu'ah), when entering and leaving the mosque, during Dua (at beginning and end), when the Prophet ﷺ is mentioned, and after hearing the Adhan. Friday is especially recommended — many scholars advise 200-1000 times on Jumu'ah.
Can I recite Darood Ibrahim outside of Salah?
+
Absolutely. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged abundant Salawat at all times. Many scholars recommend 100 times daily outside of Salah as a personal Wird (regular practice). There is no restriction on the number of times one may recite it.

Darood-e-Tanjeena (Tunjina)

Source: Vision of Shaykh Musa al-Darir | Recorded in Fajr al-Munir by Imam al-Fakahani (d.734 AH)

⛵ The Miraculous Story

Shaykh Musa al-Darir was on a ship caught in a deadly storm known as "al-iqlabiyya" (the Capsizer). In a blessed dream, the Prophet ﷺ himself appeared and taught him this Darood, saying: "Tell the passengers to recite it 1,000 times." By the time they reached 300 recitations, the storm had completely settled. This story is narrated by Shaykh Umar ibn Ali al-Fakahani in Fajr al-Munir and praised by Ibn Arabi and Imam al-Buni.

🇬🇧 English Translation

O Allah, send upon our master Muhammad a prayer through which You deliver us from all terrors and tribulations; through which You fulfil for us every need; through which You purify us from every sin; through which You raise us to the loftiest of degrees in Your Presence; and through which You cause us to reach the furthest limit in all forms of goodness, in this life and after death.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called "Tanjeena" (Tunjina)?
+
The name comes from the Arabic word "تُنْجِينَا" (tunjīnā) meaning "You deliver us / You save us." The very first request in this Darood is that Allah save us from all terrors — hence the name Tunjina (Darood of Salvation).
How many times should I recite Darood Tunjina for a specific need?
+
For pressing needs (Hajaat), scholars recommend 1,000 times in one sitting. For daily use: 11 times after each obligatory Salah. On Friday morning (between Sunnah and Fardh of Fajr): 1,000 times is especially powerful for urgent needs. The Prophet ﷺ said 1,000 recitations during adversity guarantees deliverance.
Is the story of the ship storm authentic?
+
Yes, the story is recorded by Imam Umar ibn Ali al-Fakahani (d. 734 AH) in his work "Fajr al-Munir." It is also referenced by Ibn Arabi, Imam al-Buni, and Shaykh Muhammad Haqqi al-Nazili. While some scholars note it comes through a dream (ru'ya), the majority of Sufi scholars consider it among the most reliable reports of its kind due to the consistent transmission and the tawatur of spiritual experience.
